Sensory Processing is a term that refers to the way the nervous system receives sensory messages and turns them into responses.
Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) exists when sensory signals don't get organized into appropriate responses and a child's daily routines and activities are disrupted as a result.
This neurological condition was originally called sensory integration dysfunction when it was first recognized in the the mid-1960's by Dr. A. Jean Ayres, an American occupational therapist, educational psychologist, and neuroscientist, who pioneered the study of the disorder.
